Mooladhara Chakra

Anyone into Yoga has heard of Kundalini. Kundalini Shakti, or primarily energy, is seated in the Mooladhara Chakra.   Mooladhara is a union of two Sanskrit words, Moola and Adhara. Moola means root, and Adhara means foundation. So, Mooladhara Chakra is the base Chakra. The Mooladhara is also associated with Moola Prakriti. Moola Prakriti is the basis or the original source of all creation. Mooladhara is the source of Apana, which controls the functions of the bowels, bladder, kidneys, the excretory and reproductive organs. This "Chakra" or "Vortex of Energy" is where KUNDALINI, or the "serpent power", lies coiled up three and a half times.

The Mooladhara is at the perenium for men, and at the posterior side of the cervix for women. This physical location is associated with the Brahma granthi, or the granthi of Brahma, the creator God in Hinduism. Once the knot is untied, Kundalini or prana shakti, which is locked in the Mooladhara, can rise up through the Sushumna nadi. Thus, Mooladhara is the gateway to a higher spiritual life. However, the Mooladhara is also associated with the material sheath or the Annamaya Kosha. Hence, it controls our instincts for pleasure.

In particular, the Brahma granthi can keep the Kundalini locked by causing attachment to physical and material pleasures. Mooladhara, by feeding the animalistic propensities, can become the yogi's nemesis and can drive the yogi downhill into Tamas (lethargy, dullness, darkness, negativity, ignorance). Practical yogis can get past Tamas by practicing Moola Bandha. (Note: if wrongly prescribed, Moola Bandha, by raising your energy levels very fast, can cause hyper-activity.)

The Beeja (seed) Mantra or master key for awakening the Mooladhara Chakra is Lam. Also listen to this prayer to Divine Mother Bhavani.
