Manipura Chakra

The Sanskrit meaning of the word Manipura means the "city of jewels." This chakra corresponds to the solar plexus in the nervous system, is situated at the level of the navel, and controls the Samana. The pranic force Samana controls the digestive process. Further, this is an important chakra where the Prana and the Apana pranic winds meet.  The Prana moves upward (Aarohana) and downward (Avarohana) between the Manipura and the Visuddhi, through the psychic passage (Atindriya Maarga). The Apana flows  between the Mooladhara and the Manipura. Hitting the Mooladhara repeatedly with the Apana prana vayu during Pranayama can stimulate the Chakra, and arouse the Kundalini. (Caution: Arousing the Kundalini should not be practiced without developing sufficient chastity (purity) of mind, for it can lead to insanity.)

Where as the Mooladhara and the Svadhisthana are influenced by Tamas (lethargy, dullness, darkness, negativity, ignorance), the Manipura is influenced by Rajas (activity, dynamism, strength, will power). Further, like the Svadhisthana, the Manipura is the seat of Pranamaya Kosha, or the Pranic sheath.

As per the subtle theory of the chakras, the Manipura controls the visual cortex of the brain in the occipital lobe, the two optic nerves, the area of the motor cortex of the brain specific for the legs, and the lumbar nerves. The Beeja (seed) Mantra or master key for awakening the Manipura Chakra is Ram.
