Anahata Chakra

Anahata, or the heart center, is the fourth Chakra from the bottom. In Sanskrit, Ahata means injured or struck. Anahata is the opposite of Ahata, and means uninjured or unstruck. It is supposed to be the seat of Anahata Nada, or the unstruck sound (known as such because this sound is not created by any kind of friction) which can be heard only in deep meditation. More important, the second psychic knot known as the Vishnu Granthi resides in this Chakra. If the Anahata Chakra can be aroused and the Vishnu Granthi untied, the human can cut emotional ties to those it is attached to and become full of universal love.

The Anahata is associated with the Manomaya Kosha or the mental sheath; and the pranic energy Prana flows from this Chakra. As opposed to the lower chakras which are influenced by Tamas and Rajas, the Anahata is influenced by Satva guna. This is to be expected, since it is from the heart that we can feel universal love. However, for this to happen, the Anahata needs to be aroused (or the Kundalini should rise up to this Chakra through the Sushumna). Frequently I ask the self-touting Gurus if their Kundalini is aroused, and they say: "How will I know?" If you feel deep love for your near and dear, for your family and friends, yet harbor resentments and grievances towards some, please realize that you don't have universal love, and that your Kundalini is still dormant, though some people might accept you as a Guru!

As per the subtle theory of Chakras, the Anahata controls the tactile sensory organs, which regulate input data from the skin received by the somatosensory cortex in front of the parietal lobe in the brain. The beeja mantra or master key for awakening the Anahata Chakra is Yam.
